How to Replace a Saab 93 Key Fob

Every car should be equipped with a key fob and a remote or transmitter that can lock and unlock your car. The batteries inside these devices could be defective.

If you're considering buying a Saab 93 and don't have two keys, you could add one for around $400. This involves purchasing a brand-new TWICE module at the dealer and installing it with an exclusive hand-held computer known as Tech2. Tech2.

Keys Replacement

Many used Saabs come with one key. It is recommended, as soon as possible, to purchase a spare key. This will be less expensive than replacing the entire vehicle should you lose it. It is also essential to rotate your keys regularly to avoid all the wear and tear and to keep them clean.

If you lose your only key, you'll have to replace the CIM (Column Integration Module) or TWICE (Theft Warning Integrated Central Electronics) module as well as a new key and a special program to convince the car you are not trying to steal it. These modules can cost upwards of $400 to replace and are only available through mail order. Most locksmiths or dealers are not able to replace the module on the same day.

The positive side is that many modern Saab automobiles can be equipped with a second key added to the system, without replacing the computer that was originally installed in the vehicle. The dealer will use a handheld computer called Tech-2 to program the second key into the vehicle. Certain independent garages may also be able to do this but the process is more complicated. They will need to re-program your existing car computer's EEPROM to accept the new key.

Key Fobs Replacement

Saab owners who have lost their previous key or had it stolen need the replacement as soon as they can. The steps required to obtain an original working fob will require the services department at the dealer and can cost hundreds, including an additional key and TWICE module, which is a central electronic that can be used to detect theft.

If you have a spare key it is less costly. The new key has to be aligned to the original TWICE Module. A used one will not work. However, a genuine OEM replacement can be purchased from a dealer for a fraction of what it will cost.

Getting the case for a new SAAB key fob is simple. You can make use of a flathead screwdriver to break open the case, but be careful not to damage the electronic components within. After removing the electronic components and battery, you can replace the case with the shell of the original key fob. Align the two pieces and press them gently to allow them to click in their place. Once the new fob has been installed, you can resynchronize it. It's worth noting that adding an additional key is more complicated than simply replacing the emergency key, and requires the dealer's assistance with a tool known as the Tech-2.

Keys to Reset the Ignition

If your car's keys won't start or turn on when you turn the ignition on, or it doesn't turn on when you press the starter button, first check that the transmission is in Park. This will stop the car from rolling in the event that your transmission lock fails, or if your manual transmission pops into gear.

In most cases, the problem is in the electronic components of the key fob which control the way the car recognizes the key when it is placed into the ignition cylinder. The key made of metal is easy to duplicate, but it is the electronic part of the key fob which makes the car recognize the keys.

Adding a key to the Saab car requires a specific transmitter, a transponder that goes with it and some type of special programming for the vehicle to convince the computer it is not trying to steal the vehicle. This is not something that a locksmith is able to do, it needs to be done by a dealer, or a specific handheld computer known as Tech2. Tech2.

If you already have a functioning key fob, then adding another shouldn't cost more than $200. The other cost is the actual production of the key in metal, if you need it. A majority of dealers can make this as well, but it may take a few weeks to get the key and the car programmed.
